Finding cracked stucco on your home can be a frustrating experience that comes with many questions. Why is my stucco cracking? How can I prevent in from spreading?
I reached out to our ES stucco specialist, Alex, to get answers to these commonly asked questions.
Me: You work with stucco a lot. What is the most common reason for stucco to start cracking?
Alex: There are 2 common reasons. First, paint is basically the waterproofing for stucco and homeowners aren’t keeping up with the painting maintenance.
Second, as the house settles stress cracks form.
Besides those two reasons there is also workmanship error and skipping installation steps.
If you’re like me and stucco is an unfamiliar field for you, you might have felt a little overwhelmed by his answer. You may be thinking that’s a lot of different reasons so which one applies to my situation? Whatever the case might be stucco needs to be repaired right away. So your best option would be calling an exterior building specialist. They will be able to guide you to the best solution for your house or business building.
Me: If a home or business owner notices their stucco cracking is there a way to prevent it from spreading?
Alex: It needs to be sealed with elastomeric sealant as soon as possible.
If you’re a DIY-er, you might want to try and repair the stucco yourself. But once again, the best thing to do is call a specialist. Stucco is tricky to work with so trying to DIY this fix could cause a greater problem.
